Ways to save energy during the winter months

The cost of heating your home in the winter definitely can put a dent in your family’s budget. Here are some tips from the U.S. Department of Energy to keep your heating bills under control during the cold months:

Take advantage of the sun. Allow sunlight to naturally heat your home in the afternoons by opening blinds or curtains on windows that receive direct sun. Close them at night to provide another buffer against the cold. Consider using thermal drapes to help prevent heat loss.

Scout for air leaks. Many homes have gaps and cracks that can let in cold air — and let out the warmth. Here’s a guide to help you detect air leaks.

Treat your heater right. Have a heating professional inspect and tune up your furnace at least once a year. Replace furnace filters regularly.

Keep your fireplace damper closed. Unless you are having a fire, keep the damper closed. Keeping the damper open is like keeping a window open during the winter months. Warm air can go right up the chimney.

Turn down your hot water heater. Opt for the warm setting of 120°F.
